Over the last ten years or so, the humble chicken seems to have taken over as America’s favorite protein. Maybe because of its versatility, health benefits, and cost, we have become obsessed with all things chicken. And one of the more interesting entries in the fast food chicken space has been Raising Canes! This Southern chain based out of Louisiana was founded by businessman Todd Graves in 1996 and has rapidly expanded around the country with over 700 locations. Recently, the Triangle’s first Raising Canes opened in Chapel Hill (late 2023) and I had to check it out. Here’s what to expect!

Raising Canes in Chapel Hill – Location, Interior

Given that Raising Canes was founded near LSU, it’s not a surprise at all that the first Raising Canes in the NC Triangle would pop up on Franklin Street in the heart of UNC’s campus. What was once Lula’s Fried Chicken was renovated into a fast-food, quick-service situation and they have done a good job with the space, I can’t even recognize it from its previous incarnation.

While I’m sure a lot of Raising Cane’s business is to go, there’s plenty of space upstairs if you choose to dine in. Decked out in powder Carolina blue like a lot of businesses on Franklin Street, the rough-hewn wood floors and brick facing make for a factory-like, industrial setting. Prints and posters line the room and there’s even a set of mirrored disco balls over the long communal table that sits in the center of the dining room. So there is tons of seating but I’m guessing during peak hours, it might be tough to find a table.

Raising Canes in Chapel Hill – Menu, Food

You don’t get more basic than the menu and food here at Raising Canes, you could literally scribble it on a napkin! Four chicken finger combos (chicken, fries, slaw, bun and Canes sauce), one kids combo and then fresh tea, lemonade and fountain drinks. Raising Canes’ menu was built for the indecisive because if you can’t figure out what you want here, you should probably stay at home!

All the food here at Raising Cane’s is served in styrofoam containers given the meal a bit of a cheap feel. But the chicken is super tender and tasty, with a light fried coating. And that Cane’s sauce is awesome! Who doesn’t like chicken and who am I to argue with such a successful food formula? I’ll add more to this review once I’ve had a chance to get back for another visit.
Raising Canes in Chapel Hill – Conclusion

Yes, Raising Canes has a tiny menu and yes, it’s just chicken tenders but you know what? They are pretty damn good chicken fingers! So if you’re in the mood you really can’t go wrong with a visit to Raising Canes. For fast food, it’s pretty delicious but you have to be in the mood for chicken. Just wish they could make the parking easier, already looking forward to visit #2!
